Design students get career advice from some of Periscope's best.

With thousands in scholarship dollars at stake, 35 design students from the Upper Midwest came together in Minneapolis to get a head start on their career at the AIGA’s prestigious Portfolio 1-on-1 event.

Sitting between them and a scholarship was a panel of local design professionals – including Periscope’s own Design Director, Bruce Bourne. Bourne was joined at the judging table by Tim Larsen from Larsen Design, Ben Levitz from studio on fire, and Kate Wicoxon from the university of Minnesota.

The quartet handed out two scholarships during the event: a $1,500 award for the 2010 AIGA Minnesota Scholarship and $1,000 for the 2010 Larsen Design Scholarship. In addition to the scholarships, students were given an opportunity to win $700 for Design Camp®, AIGA’s premier event.

After the scholarships and prize money were handed out, Bourne joined several other professional designers who were asked to provide additional portfolio advice to students. Among the group were Periscopians Jesse Bodell, Michelle Rollins, Patrick Weld and Jen Sheeler.

And weeks prior, back at Periscope, Jessica Hall-Burns was hard at work on designing the event collateral. From posters to logos to online materials, Hall-Burns developed a unique and engaging design. It set the tone for the event and sent a clear message to the students that the devil is in the details and the bar is, indeed, quite high.

As the event came to a close, a few students left with more money in their pocket. But all of them left with a sense of what it took to succeed at the next level. And a group of Periscope designers went back to work; eager to watch these new careers develop.

“It was an honor to be on a panel with other great designers – I really enjoyed the experience,” said Bourne. “We were all students once, so we could relate to what it takes to build a strong portfolio.”
