Periscope Introduces “Have Some High 5s” Website And Mobile App

Every so often, you need to surprise yourself. To stray from the script. To make something simply for the sake of making it.

This is exactly why Periscope encourages its employees to experiment and find new and compelling ways to tell stories. The latest example: Have Some High 5s.

A strange brew of a website, iPhone app and social media outlets, the entire bucket begs the question: Shouldn’t you have some high 5s? If the answer is yes, users are treated to a wide array of video content featuring nearly 140 variations on the classic high 5. The videos range from bizarre (“Stunt Man High 5”) to poignant (“Reading Sex Quizzes In Women’s Magazines High 5”).

Have Some High 5s came from the desire to make something we liked, without compromise,” said Scott Berglund, Periscope Motion Graphics Designer and co-creator of the entire high 5 experience. “Since the site has launched, a few people have said to me, ‘This thing is pretty cool, but what is it for?’ The answer I give is there’s no other reason than to create something fun showing two bearded men high-fiving each other in as many strange and hilarious scenarios we could think of.”

To complement this bizarre theme, lengths were taken to ensure the entire look of the Have Some High 5s didn’t adhere to traditional website design.

“Working on this project was liberating as a designer,” said Bill Gunter, Periscope Senior Digital Designer and the guy behind the website’s, social channels’ and iPhone app’s customized look. “In fact, I sought out this project and stepped over the corpse of another designer to work on it. From start to finish, it has been both a fun and educational project to be a part of.”

The project also required some technical trickery as both the website and iPhone app — which uses actual high 5 motions — are synced to let you know how many global high 5s have been given.

“Tying the site to an iPhone app was a first for me,” said Adam Kass, Periscope Digital Developer and ambassador of the high 5 technical components. “It really opened my eyes to the possibilities of pairing an app to rich content on the web to create an overall user experience.”

You can see the website and link to the social channels at www.havesomehigh5s.com. And stay tuned — the Have Some High 5s mobile app is pending approval by Apple.
