The chalk had barely settled on the base paths when the Periscope Piranhas took the field to kick off (wait, that's a football term), to launch (nope, NASA), to open (let me think … perfect), to start (changed my mind) the 2009 Advertising League coed softball season.
After back-to-back campaigns of Timberwolves-like futility, the Piranhas unexpectedly burst onto the 2009 scene like Susan Boyle in short pants, winning their first six games in most impressive fashion. Quit was replaced by grit … and pluck quietly replaced suck. The Piranhas were bringing it and our opponents were forced to take it.
And then, without warning, the bubble burst, and the Piranhas, summoning their best David Hasselhoff impression, staggered to the season’s end. The team entered the playoffs with more unanswered questions than an interview with Joaquin Phoenix. But they were determined.
After a first-round bye, the Piranhas dusted off the old magic and cruised to a second-round victory. Their semifinals game against Campbell Mithun was one for the ages … or at least the hour and thirty minutes that it lasted. Battling back from a huge deficit, the Piranhas six-run, 7th-inning rally came up just short, and their glorious season was officially over.
Bravo to the Piranhas, a team that we are proud to call out (try again), to call Mariah (nope, that’s the wind), to call ours (perfect).
