2009 4A's Creative Summit held at Guthrie Theater.

On Friday, October 23, 2009, a group of dedicated advertising wunderkinds braved the elements (a slight mist) and a 65-degree north face (the escalator) to gather with their own at the 2009 Creative Summit, held at the Guthrie Theater.

Commandeering the Wurtele thrust stage were four of the industry’s brightest and most tightly focused creative lights:

Luke Sullivan, Senior Vice President & Managing Group Creative Director, GSD&M

Jason Elm, Group Creative Director, Deutsch/LA

Andy Azula, Senior Vice President & Creative Director, The Martin Agency (You'd also recognize Andy as the actor appearing in the UPS whiteboard spots)

Gary Goldsmith, former Chief Creative Office, Young & Rubicam

Periscope's Associate Creative Director, Jim Detmar, served as the event host, as roughly 120 local advertising creatives were treated to an exploration into the creation of great work and learned why sometimes that isn't enough. Attendees were also schooled on keeping their creative game tight, as the cadre of colorful speakers shared personal tales of developing effective strategic thinking around an idea and then selling that powerful idea to those that matter most.

In closing, Luke Sullivan, author of Hey Whipple, Squeeze This!, reminded the audience: Hey, we all suck a little. And when you leave here today, you will still suck. But hopefully you will suck a little less.

As harsh as that sounds, the guy's got a point. Last time I looked, there is a "u" in suck.
