Domination.
It can take several forms. In this case, domination took the shape of the Periscope soccer team
Known to their opponents as The Gleeful Unicorns, these Periscopians have been shooting, passing, and occasionally scoring as they honed their domination skills these past few years. In June, it was time to put those skills to work.
Coming off a better-than-usual regular season record of 4-2, the Gleefuls squeaked into the post season as the eighth and final seed and took to the field against a previously undefeated team. If there were a David vs. Goliath story in soccer, then, well, this was it.
Down three goals within the first five minutes, the Gleefuls settled things down as Brand Advocacy superstar Kevin Christie knocked the ball past the goalie. And just before the half, designer-extraordinaire Bart Knockaert slotted home the second goal, leaving the Gleefuls down by just one. The second half saw a flurry of action and, at the end of the day, the Periscopians stood tall, winning 6-4. On to the finals.
This final game would go down in history as one of the greatest games ever played in the Minneapolis co-ed, recreational, non-competitive soccer league. With about 10 minutes left and the score tied 2-2, Digital Producer Jordana Lieberthal took booted the ball past a diving goalie and into the net, giving Periscope a 3-2 lead. Not four minutes later, in what was reminiscent of a scene from “the Karate Kid,” Jordana fell victim to a cheap shot to her knee and spent the remainder of the game on the sidelines. Down a player, the Gleeful Unicorns tightened their defense and held on for an amazing 3-2 victory—and the championship.
“This will go down as the greatest victory for any Periscope sports team,” stated co-captain and Associate Creative Director Rob Peichel. “Victory has never been better. And it shows. Just look at these awesome championship t-shirts we got.”
As they departed into the night, the only Periscope sports team to win a championship patted each other on the back, boasted loudly of their victory, and made plans to do it all over again the following season.
Your move, softball.
